“Not to get philosophical but we’re all kind of loners though, ultimately. You can have family, can have lots of friends, but ultimately we’re all here passing through this thing. How much can we hang on to other people? These are things everybody goes through. But I don’t know. I’m attracted to these kinds of characters. Not quite sure why, but they make for good stories that I like to tell.” - Paul Thomas Anderson

“Those water shots are just nice. Sometimes you do things that you think are a good idea. Other times, you just hope that some feeling hits you when you’re putting the film together. You have to follow that. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I don’t know where it comes from. And you’ve got to listen to it.” - Paul Thomas Anderson

“We were all trying to figure out how to make booze and we’re all too stupid to do it. And so, [assistant art director] Ruth was like, “We need an expert. And I found somebody.” Honestly, we were like, good, because [production designer] Jack Fisk tried making this booze that almost killed Joaquin and I.” - Paul Thomas Anderson

[On actor Joaquin Phoenix] “I knew he’d be good, but I can’t say that I expected what we got… I love watching him, and I get the impression people don’t understand that there’s actually a truly inventive and disciplined actor there, which I guess is great. I would hate to say too much and uncover the mystery.” - Paul Thomas Anderson

“No, we don’t really know a lot of times what’s going to happen with Joaquin or Freddie. But I knew something was going to happen. I knew it was the first take. And I said, we just looked at each other, you agree, “You’re going to go in there, you’re not going to like being in there; Let’s see what happens.” And they put him in there and he did what he did [Break the toilet]. Unfortunately, that was a historical toilet. I’m not making a joke about that. We were shooting down in San Pedro. It was a very historic jail cell. The guys heard the toilet smash and came in there and said, “What is going on in here? That’s a historical toilet. There’s not another one like it.” …isn’t that weird?” - Paul Thomas Anderson

“Sometimes you get cold feet as a director… Sometimes he’d do something so outlandish, and I’d think, ‘Hmm, I’m not so sure.’ And then lo and behold, six months later, you’re in the editing room, and you say: ‘Thank God. What was I thinking? How could I have possibly second-guessed that?’” - Paul Thomas Anderson

[On the relationship between Freddie & Lancaster] “Well, just a friendship, I think. I can see the father/son thing, for sure. I think all the comparisons work. At it’s simplest level it’s just a friendship between two men. One supposedly in complete command of all of his faculties and the other wrestling with them openly and aggressively. They’re drinking pals, too, and they’re scoundrels together sort of moving through this life. But they have that kind of nagging thing that most of us have had when you meet someone and you could’ve sworn you know them from somewhere else. That kind of friend that just as you’re thinking of them and they call, you know?” - Paul Thomas Anderson

“I’ve seen films that I absolutely could not stand when I saw it. Or I just thought, ‘I don’t know what is going on here.’ Then five years later, you see it and you can’t believe you missed something or what were you thinking? Or the opposite: You see a film, and you think the heavens have opened up. Then a couple of years later, you’re not quite sure what the hell’s going on, what were you thinking? Films should be like that. That’s great. They’re moving, living things. In different situations they’re different, you know? You walk into the theatre expecting something, or you’re in a bad mood, or you’re in a good mood — you’re open to anything.” - Paul Thomas Anderson
