In A Sentimental Mood
Duke Ellington & John Coltrane

Manny, after dinner:
“One slow night a man walks in, and would you believe it, it’s Duke Ellington. I ask him if he wants a scotch or something and he says, ‘scotch is fine.’ Very humble this man, I tells him that me and my brother really enjoy that song, ‘In a Sentimental Mood’. There was an old grand piano in the back of our club, horrible ancient thing, but he got right on there and played for 30 minutes or so. That was the night I met the Duke.”
“When I was 12, I was making small feature-films, which took place in the woods around my house, with the hand-held camera. The most refined thing at the time was I discovered if you used indoor film outdoors, you could get these weird, bluish colours. That was great, and I wanted to know more about that. I used 8mm cameras for eight years before moving on to 16mm. I’m crazy about these Bolex cameras and felt I could do anything with them -expose the film and take it back, do single frames and triple exposure and so on. I tried every technique.”
